AI Dungeon Alternatives in 2026

Free and paid options

AI Dungeon is still where most people start with AI storytelling, and for a lot of them it's the right place to stay. But it's a storytelling tool more than a game. There's no HP to lose and no inventory to run out of. AI Dungeon says as much itself: its help docs send anyone who wants "health, inventory, quests and progression" to Voyage, a separate product.

So people go looking elsewhere when they want rules, a different price, or something that suits how they play. These are the options we'd look at. We make one of them, NERVEJACK, so read our part with that in mind.

NERVEJACK

This one's ours. It's a single-player text RPG set in Neo-Kowloon, a cyberpunk city built on top of a drowned Hong Kong. You type what you do, an AI game master tells you what happens, and the game keeps score underneath: HP, credits, inventory, and which factions want you dead. Dice roll where you can't see them. If your HP hits zero, that character is gone for good.

The city is written by hand, with around 160 named characters and over 100 locations, so the fixer you stiffed last week is still around and still remembers you.

It won't suit everyone. There's one setting, you play alone, and it's text only. It's also 18+ and R-rated. Free play gives you 20 turns on your first day and 10 a day after that. Pro is $12 a month or $96 a year for unlimited turns.

Friends & Fables

If what you actually want is D&D, start here. Friends & Fables runs D&D 5e with an AI game master in your browser, with battlemaps, spells and turn-based combat. You can bring up to five friends, and only the host has to pay.

The flip side is that it's 5e or nothing. Their site says it "only supports D&D 5e systems." Paid plans start at $19.95 a month, and we've laid out every Friends & Fables plan on a separate page.

AI Game Master

A phone app for iOS and Android that covers a lot of ground, from D&D to horror to cyberpunk, with XP, items, companions and dice. It also makes images, narration and video as you play.

It runs on tokens. One turn costs one token, packs start at 25 for $0.99, and the unlimited plans start at $24.99 a month. Here's how AI Game Master's tokens work in more detail.

Voyage

This is the AI Dungeon team's own answer for people who want health, inventory and quests. We haven't spent real time with it, so we won't pretend to know how it compares.

Or Stay Put

If you like hopping between genres, playing with friends and making images, AI Dungeon already does that, and its free tier comes with what it calls "unlimited AI use" on the free models. Paid plans start at $14.99 a month if you want more models and a longer memory.
